The Joker!

The infamous Joker (born on December 31st) is one anomaly of this system. Olney Richmond, author of the original book on the sacred science of the cards, states in The Mystic Test Book that the Solar Value of the Joker is 0, which interestingly means it is no card at all.

Zero represents the unmanifested potential of the universe. Zero is nothing because it has no value, yet it is out of Zero that everything comes. So a Zero has the potential to become anything. That’s why Zero is ‘nothing’ and yet ‘everything’. The Zero is the unmanifested universe, the field of infinite possibilities from which all things are born or created. Being no card, the Joker is like a fertile field into which any seed may be planted. Thus, the Joker can become any card that he or she chooses.

The Joker is like a super-Jack, the Jack of all Jacks. As Robert Lee Camp points out in his book, Exploring the Little Book of the Seven Thunders, “all Jacks can act and portray different qualities in order to get what they want, the Joker can actually become that character.” Some of the best actors and performers like Anthony Hopkins, Val Kilmer and Ben Kingsley are Jokers who use their gifts to entertain and delight audiences around the world. Jokers seem to gravitate to the performing arts or other areas where they can be recognized and appreciated.

Or Card of Cosmic Comedians???

World renowned comedian, George Carlin, was quoted as saying, “People who see life as anything more than pure entertainment are missing the point.” I totally agree and that is why I tell all my clients and students that the cards are for “entertainment purposes” only. Then I follow that up with the comment that “all of life is for entertainment purposes only!” Why? Because we are all characters is the greatest movie ever made.

Here is a perfect example to show the validity of that statement and the Science of the Cards. All of these comedians with basically different birthdays are the same card, the Seven of Diamonds 7♦. This card is commonly referred to as the card of spiritual values and is a member of the Magical Family of Seven. To be spiritual, as the number Seven implies, is to be free of concern for worldly or material affairs, including relationships, money, good health and attitudes. Could it be that these comedians were/are here to tell us to lighten up and laugh at ourselves and life in general? I certainly think so!

The Card of Spiritual Values

The Seven of Diamonds 7♦ is one of those unique cards called a ‘Semi-Fixed’ Card. As part of a Magical Family of Seven uniquely different cards, these people fall into a different category and have a special mark on their lives.

Being a Seven in and of itself brings a certain amount of playfulness. They are able to touch upon the mystical dimensions of life where almost anything is possible. Their own values and behavior can change often, which makes them a lot like a Jack. Yet, many of them can be quite stubborn. The Seven of Diamonds 7♦ people are also extremely creative and some are destined to become millionaires in this lifetime by accessing the high side of this spiritual money card, which is often referred to as the “millionaire’s card.”

The Seven of Diamonds 7♦ is one of the most spiritual cards in the deck and as such, their success comes from approaching life in ways other than traditional or materialistic. The most successful are the ones that live in the faith and trust that all their needs will be provided for. By suit, they are always connected with money. As a spiritual number, they must maintain a non-attached attitude about money or there will be continuous problems in this area. Most Seven of Diamonds 7♦ people are either worrying about it all the time or not worrying and having as much as they like. Regardless, many of their life lessons will come through this issue.

When they tap develop the art of appreciation and have an attitude of gratitude, they won’t lack anything in their lives again. Once on the spiritual path, everything in their life is put into proper perspective and they can excel in any chosen field. Whatever profession they choose they bring forth a unique creative gift and the gift of knowing how to promote what they do. Their success comes in giving and in not being attached to or having expectations as to how others respond to them or to what they get back. The Seven of Diamonds 7♦ will only succeed by letting go and becoming part of the divine flow.

Who Are They?

They are the K♠, J♥, 8♣, A♣, 2♥, 7♦ and 9♥. These Fixed (K♠, J♥ and 8♣) and Semi-Fixed Cards (A♣, 2♥ and 7♦, 9♥) are seven cards in the deck that have no karma cards in the usual sense.

While we know very little about this magical group, these seven cards comprise a special family of cards that are karmically linked only to each other. In essence, each of these cards has six other karma cards, where the other 45 cards of the deck only have two. Whenever we see two of any of these seven cards together, we know the one of the reasons for them being together is to repay some past-life debt between them. You will find that people of the magical group are very often found together, either through love, marriage, friendship or in business associations.

And Hearts people, too!

The Hearts suit governs the first period of our lives and the first season of the year – the season of childhood. Family, love, home, relationships, emotions, and children all fall under the domain of Hearts. They usually love children.

People who are born as a Hearts Birth Card are often child-like in nature because they are the children of the deck, often maintaining a youthful exuberance even into later years. They never really get old, at least not on the inside.

Hearts people are most concerned and affected by their personal relationships, especially relationships with people in their families. They live through emotions and relationships. Hearts is also the suit of sex and Hearts people seem to make that a greater priority than the other suits. Most people find them to be very sensual and sexual. The Hearts person is here searching for the perfect love. The positive Hearts person is friendly and affectionate; the negative Hearts person is self-indulgent and flirtatious.

Hearts people excel in people-oriented careers and make good nurses, teachers, and counselors, as well as artists and musicians.

Interestingly, there are 52 Hearts birthdays in a year, the same number of cards in a deck!

March, Martius or Ares?

The name of “March” comes from ancient Rome, when March was the first month of the year and named Martius after Mars or Ares, the Greek god of war. In Rome, where the climate is Mediterranean, March was the first month of spring, a logical point for the beginning of the year as well as the start of the military campaign season. January became the first month of the calendar year either under King Numa Pompilius (c. 713 BCE) or under the Decemvirs about 450 BCE (Roman writers differ). The numbered year began on March 1 in Russia until the end of the 15th century. Great Britain and its colonies continued to use March 25 until 1752, which was when they ultimately adopted the Gregorian calendar. Many other cultures and religions still celebrate the beginning of the New Year in March.

The Aces!

In the Sacred Science of the Cards, One is called the ACE and represents the beginning. It feels its supreme importance as the ego and says: “I AM.” In the Sacred Science of the Cards, ones are represented by the Aces. They have the power to create and to manifest.

The Ace represents the most primary of the masculine, creative principal. All Aces, regardless of their sex, will have a somewhat masculine nature, either physically or just as part of their personality. The number “1″ phallic shape reveals this masculine energy. Aces can be quite forceful and their “giving” energy is felt in their lives and relationships.

Ones have the power of manifestation. Each time we move from one number to the next, we have added a One to it. One is the masculine energy that must go and do something new. They never rest for very long as they always have the desire to start something new. The Ace, like all the odd cards, is a specifier. They create new ideas, new energies, new thoughts, and new desires. They are able to manifest so easily because they have just emerged from the void of the unmanifested.

The life of an Ace can be a constant chain of one creation after another. They are always creating and manifesting and exemplify the creative masculine force.  They are conduits of new ideas and projects and seem to be constantly receiving (channeling) input from some higher force. They love new beginnings and to go forth and create something new and see their ideas come into materialization. Seeing, hearing, tasting or touching something they have created is their ultimate reward. Bringing something into manifest, something that was not here before, is the Aces greatest satisfaction and their greatest challenge. Because Aces are great initiators, they can start more things than they can finish. You will find them working on a project for a while and then suddenly start working on a new idea. They get bored quickly and want something new to do or someone new to interact with.  Most Aces excel at communications and their lives are often an endless flow of phone calls, e-mail and letters.

Aces are definitely not known for their patience. They want it right now. They want it right away and with no excuses or delays. And many pay the price for having it now. Aces seem to have an unconscious knowing about their ability of manifestation which possibly could be the reason for their impatience. With so much to accomplish and so little time to do it, they don’t like to waste standing in line, sitting in traffic or waiting for others to finish talking. Overflowing with desire and ideas on how to make something happen, it is not their nature to wait for something to happen. Remember this if you are dealing with an Ace. If they seem impatient, it is because they have something important that they want to get done. It is not that they don’t like you. Aces, however, are self-absorbed to a certain degree. If you are not contributing something to them in a tangible way or giving them something they want or need, then your relationship with them has outlived its usefulness and will be over quickly.

Like the number One, Aces represent the individual, a singular person. Aces can be very private and are often loners. Many Aces feel alone even in relationships or when they are around others. While Ace people do function well by themselves, they are often found in groups because three out of four of the Aces in the deck have a Two as a Karma Card:

Ace of Clubs♣ has a Two of Hearts.

Ace of Diamonds♦ has a Two of Diamonds.

Ace of Spades♠ has a Two of Clubs.

Twos represent a union of two people. A couple or pair. Aces want to be satisfied with the Two, to bind with another, to bond with someone, and be in balance. The hidden influence of these karma cards brings a certain amount of concern and consideration for others. Many Aces can be quite charming and even caring. On some level, they do feel the need of other people in order to feel complete. This is a paradox for the Ace person who often feels the need to be by themselves while at the same time has an eternal longing for the perfect mate or companion.

Above all else, Aces are individuals and need time to themselves to explore who they are on a basic level. Yet, with an abundance of masculine energy expressed as action and accomplishment, Aces tend to find themselves in the reflection of their accomplishments and awards instead of looking within. They are here to learn self-acceptance. Aces need to sit still long enough to look in the mirror and discover what they have been yearning for all along was always inside them.

The Order of the Magi…

With its origin over 20,000 years ago in the early days of Atlantis, the Order of the Magi is probably one of the oldest spiritual organizations that has ever existed. No one knows the exact origin of the group, but evidence shows that they have maintained and preserved some of our most valuable and important spiritual sciences. These are the Magi of ancient Egypt and before; those who study the laws of nature and our cosmos; those who know the secrets of our planet and are dedicated to the preservation and sharing of these ancient truths. It has been said that the wise men and prophets written about in the Bible were among its members and that even Jesus himself was one of their ordained and trained leaders. It is only now that the world is ready for the information that has been kept completely secret for thousands of years. It was in 1894 through Olney Richmond that the very first book was made public, revealing some of their astounding information.

Olney Richmond

The fascinating science of the cards, which incorporates astrology and numerology, is believed to date back to the days of Atlantis. The oldest printed material known comes to us from Olney H. Richmond, a man who published information about the cards in 1893 in his first book, The Mystic Test Book. It was given this title because everything inside could actually be tested for its validity. He gave some miraculous demonstrations for the newspaper reporters who came to see and understand his work.

Olney Richmond was the Grand Master of the Order of the Magi, which he officially resurrected in the upper Midwest in the late 19th century. Richmond was a Civil War veteran who was told of the Order by a mysterious stranger one night while he stood guard duty in Nashville, Tennessee. This stranger told him that he was to be his successor and eventually passed on to him the teachings of the Magi. Further, he told Richmond that he would pass through many battles in the course of the war, but that no harm would come to him. This proved to be true.

Richmond held that the Order had centers in not only Chaldea, but also Egypt and Persia. He also held that Pythagoras, one of the most famous and controversial ancient Greek philosophers who lived from ca. 570 to ca. 490 BCE, was a Grand Master of the Order (by way of the Egyptian temple).

It is said that the original cards were carved on ivory tablets and used exclusively by the priests in the temples in Atlantis. Later, the tablets were moved to Egypt to help preserve the human race.

Richmond lectured in the Grand Temple of the Magi on the history, philosophy, and practices of the Order as well as other topics including the Astral Body, the Study of Infinity, and the Evolution of Matter. An interesting aspect of the Order was its extensive use of magic squares and playing cards in divination. Richmond had extraordinary mathematical abilities. His skills and mathematical analysis of the game of checkers were publicly demonstrated during the 19th century- the peak of that sport.

The Ace of Spades has always been the symbol for this ancient group and that is why, to this day, the Ace of Spades always appears larger in decks of cards throughout the world. The Ace of Spades represents the secrets that lie behind what appears to be the truth. It represents the veil that separates the material and spiritual worlds and the power that we have to make a personal transformation to a higher level of consciousness.

The Mystical Significance of Our Fifty-Two “Playing” Cards and Their Amazing Connection with Our Individual Birthdays

After Olney Richmond passed away in 1920, his daughter, Arline Richmond, carried on his work. Among her students were two ladies, Florence Campbell and Edith Randall, who later published their own book called Sacred Symbols of the Ancients. This out-of-print book is still available and is the first to illuminate the personality traits of the 52 Birth Cards. Though they never talked much about the Order, their work served to spread the knowledge of this transformational system to seekers around the world.

Arne Lein

One of Edith Randall’s students was named Arnie Lein. After studying the cards for over 20 years and becoming a well known reader in Hollywood circles, Arnie published his own book, What’s Your Card?, which is currently out of print. He taught many students in Los Angeles, California as did Edith Randall and Florence Campbell and there are people in that area that have been using this system ever since.

The Cards of Life!

The Cards of Life are for more than just birthdays. Every business, every contract, every product or website launch, every relationship and even this newsletter has a birthday. The day that any venture is created or birthed, that new entity from that union has a birthday. Like us, it has a Birth Card with all the lessons, rewards and even karma associated with its birthday.

Many people ask about the cards of their relationships. Relationships define us and powerfully impact our lives. The day that two people get married, their marriage, their union takes on the life of the card for that day. Of course, Bill Gates is a wealthy American business magnate and philanthropist, who is the chairman of Microsoft, but is it possible that he and Melinda understood the energies that their particular wedding day would bring to them each and every day for as long as they remain married?

The King of Spades is the final, and most powerful card in the deck, King of Spades representing both mastery of one’s environment and one’s self. This card is endowed with good fortune, especially in legal matters and business, but can be blessed with success in any area of life. It is truly the card of ‘success in all things’ but brings the most blessings to those who are ready and willing to take responsibility for their life and work and who can take a leadership position. Remember every King has a kingdom. Bill and Melinda Gates have certainly created that and much, much more. When two people get married on January 1st, they should be prepared to take a leadership role and to live by their own wisdom. Success is theirs for the taking, but they have to stand up and claim it.

When Does a Relationship Begin?

We obviously don’t marry every one we meet but it is helpful to know how a new relationship can be supported and given every opportunity for success by knowing the cards. As the relationship changes, the card for the relationship changes as well. Here is the order in which it typically progresses:

• ~ Day you meet
• ~ Day you go on your first date
• ~ Day you first kiss
• ~ Day you decide to date each other exclusively
• ~ Day you first have sex
• ~ Day you get engaged
• ~ Day you get married

At each step along the way, the previous card that represented the relationship is replaced by the next. Obviously there are events in our lives that cannot be scheduled or controlled and are destined to happen. However, using this empowering information as a guide, it can help us overcome today’s overwhelming odds stacked against the success of long-term relationships, especially marriage. Using the Cards of Life can bring love, success, and magic to all your new relationships!

The Mayan Way – Simple and Sacred!

Every day of the year has a particular card and with that card comes specific energies, experiences and even karma that affect your life that day. The “natural” card for each day influences you even if it is not your Birth Card or your Planetary Ruling Card. For example, anyone born today would be a Queen of Clubs person. Even though today, December 6th, is not your birthday, the Queen of Clubs influences you and everyone else on the planet. These universal energies affect all of us. There is much you can discover about the cards, their meanings and the universal energies coming each day by reading the Card of the Day!

Since The Card of the Day! email service launched August 2011, myself and others have noticed how this natural card of the day impacts our lives and now better understand the power that it contains. Dr. Jose Jaramillo, a professor of the Maya at UCSD in La Jolla, CA, interviewed me for his latest documentary called “The Alignment Within” which was released in August 2011. In the film, everyone interviewed spoke about how these energies affect everyone on the planet. The Maya simply used various animals and elements in their glyphs to express these sacred energies. Although the symbols in the cards differ in appearance from Mayan glyphs, they do offer similar wisdom and knowledge that we, too, can use personally and professionally to enhance our experience of life each and every day.

One practice that the Maya performed daily is after sunset they the studied the glyph for the next day. Before going to sleep, they would simply ask and pray that they could use these upcoming universal energies in a way that would enhance their life and their community. They understood that each day brings a sacred gift and asked that they use this gift from the universe for the highest good of all.

Unfortunately, most people in our society see life as a merry-go-round where each day is basically the same as the next. Our modern day culture doesn’t recognize these unique daily energies. I am honored to continue this ancient sacred tradition with those who subscribe to The Card of the Day! email service and celebrate each card and the universal energies and wisdom it contains to affect positive change in their lives and the world around them.

The Maya were master timekeepers and understood that life is so easy when we are in the divine flow with time. Every day I see how these cards play out magically for myself and others. Many days I feel that I am just writing The Card of the Day! for myself. If you pay attention and watch how things unfold, you too will discover that the accuracy is astounding. The Fives in many ways represent the teenage years of life; a time when one wants to leave the safety and security of home and go out to explore and find something more. The teenage years are a time when we yearn for personal freedom and self-expression. This energy can continue into our twenties as well, as we are curious about the world around us and want to have new experiences, explore foreign lands, meet new people and learn other languages. This is time when we look to the unconventional and unrestricted, especially in areas of relationships, sexuality, religion, spirituality, and even politics.

Fives are enthusiastic agents of change and adventure. I always think of a roller coaster ride whenever I see Fives in my spreads and usually mark things on my calendar in pencil because I know they are going to change. These Fives remind me that it is time for adventure and not to have any expectations or to be attached to any specific outcome. The more attached we are, the more difficult these changes will be. Fives in our spreads indicate a time when we need to raise our hands and enjoy the ride with the highs and lows that change brings!

Edith Randall and Florence Campbell say in their book, Sacred Symbols of the Ancients, that if you look carefully at the formation of the spots on a Five playing card that you will see a Cross. “Life experience is of necessity a cross. Changes and surprises we regard with disfavor since it is but human to fear the unfamiliar or unknown. We may regard the 5 solely in this light if we choose to–but the wise ones recognize Change as Growth, the release from the well-worn rut as Opportunity.” They go on to say that:

HEARTS ♥ have the problem of unsatisfied emotions
CLUBS ♣ of a chronic mental restlessness-no peace
DIAMONDS ♦ of money that is never enough
SPADES ♠ of ill-paid labor

The Five of Clubs 5♣ is the most challenged card in terms of being that way because they have a Five of Hearts 5♥ Karma Card. A life with Double Fives is rough, like living in revolving door. They never know if they are coming or going. One single Five of Clubs 5♣ woman that I know is in her late 50′s and has never had a job for more than 18 months! This is the life of a Five. Now don’t laugh because at some point you will have this card in your spreads as well. The high side of this Five card is the true adventurer, the type who gets a broad view of the world by experience. They are the gatherer of experiences. Randall and Campbell go on about Fives to say, “They want change because they do not want what they have, but as soon as the change is made–still fearful of what lies ahead–they want to change the change. There is always the change that more freedom lies up ahead–and Freedom is their battle-cry.”

Fives indicate a time of dissatisfaction and time for a change. Change demands that we let go of the old to make way for the new. In the four suits of the cards, it basically plays out as the following:

Five of Hearts 5♥ – change of heart
Five of Clubs 5♣ – change of mind or plans
Five of Diamonds 5♦ – change of values
Five of Spades 5♠ – change of lifestyle

The restlessness of a Five can be easily be satisfied by simply taking a trip or vacation. A trip brings in a new experience and creates fresh energy and a new outlook. When most people go on vacation, they return with a new perspective and a new way of looking at life. Travel can definitely satisfy that urge for change which is why all the Fives in our cards correspond to a change in lifestyle, a move, travel, or trips. Fives thrive when they travel to foreign countries and meet new people and broaden their horizons. The Five constantly seeks to expand itself and to discover what else lies beyond the security of home. The feeling of adventure and excitement that comes from travel feeds their soul on a level that most Fours cannot relate to. In many cases, people with Five Birth Cards exhibit such an extreme quest for new experiences that it is difficult for those around them to understand their motives. Fives often take great risks and endure tremendous hardships, all in the name of adventure.

Five means stepping up to a new level of your evolution; being ready to move out of stability and expand your world and your perspective of reality. Five is the number of adventure and of seeking new experiences in the realm of duality. The high side of a Five offers an outgoing influence that brings new things or new people or new situations. It can also indicate socializing and meeting new people. Traveling, having new experiences, gathering new information, wisdom, and so forth are positive expressions of the Five influence.

The “low” side or challenge that comes with being a Five is a great deal of restlessness and dissatisfaction. Fives will often just get up, leave or even move to a new location when a restless urge overtakes them. Unlike other cards, even the other odd-numbered ones, Fives feel as though they have no real home. Home is the domain of the Four person, and the Five is the number which has just evolved.

In his book, Love Cards, Robert Lee Camp says, “In fact, Five in its highest expression is the number of wisdom. Wisdom only comes through direct experience and if we talk to a Five, we are talking to someone who has ‘been there, done that.’”

James Maury “Jim” Henson (September 24, 1936 – May 16, 1990) was the famous American puppeteer, best known as the creator of The Muppets. He was also a King of Hearts and one who created a kingdom of characters that children and adults from around the world love and adore. As a puppeteer, Henson performed in various television programs, such as Sesame Street and The Muppet Show and films such as The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper. He created advanced puppets for projects like Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth. He was also an Oscar-nominated film director, Emmy Award-winning television producer, and the founder of The Jim Henson Company, the Jim Henson Foundation, and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. May 16, 1990 at the age of 53, he died on of organ failure resulting from a streptococcal infection.

Jim Henson, born in Greenville, Mississippi, is one of the most widely known puppeteers in the world. In 1954 while attending Northwestern High School, he began working for WTOP-TV, creating puppets for a Saturday morning children’s show. After graduating from high school, Henson enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park, as a studio arts major, thinking he might become a commercial artist. A puppetry class offered in the applied arts department introduced him to the craft and textiles courses. In 1960 he graduated with a B.S. in home economics. As a freshman, he had been asked to create Sam and Friends, a five-minute puppet show for WRC-TV. The characters on Sam and Friends were forerunners of the Muppets, and the show included a prototype of Henson’s most famous character: Kermit the Frog. Henson remained at WRC for seven years from 1954 to 1961. Among the first of his assignments was Afternoon, a magazine show for housewives. This marked his first collaboration with Jane Nebel, the woman who later became his wife and mother to their five children. Here his King of Hearts “father” role played out again, allowing him to create another kingdom–a kingdom of his own real live children!

Why Do So Many Die at Age 52?   

In the Sacred Science of the Cards, Age 52 is referred to as the Critical Year. It arrives when we reach a place in our life where we have lived out much of our divine purpose and get to choose whether or not to stay on the planet. Opportunities disguised as health issues or accidents happen within a year or so (51-53) of this age to provide us that very choice. Live or leave?

In May 1990, this opportunity came for Jim Henson as well. He passed away “unexpectedly” at Age 53 from organ failure. He chose to leave–his mission was accomplished. Interesting, Lolo Soetoro, the Indonesian stepfather of President Barack Obama, also died at Age 52. In the game of life, each and every one of us has the opportunity to ask ourselves on a soul level if we want to continue to live or leave. We are given a chance to decide if we have we fulfilled our karma and purpose this lifetime.

So what is this “Critical Year” and why do so many people “die” at or around Age 52? I know from my research on the Mayan civilization while writing my novel, Flying Between Heaven and Earth, that this age has great significance in the indigenous cultures as well.
